Inaugural St Laurence Lecture, at St. Laurence Church, The Moor, Hawkhurst
Wednesday 16th January 2019

Father Rodney, Vicar of St Laurence, has long held an ambition to add an annual lecture to the programme of church events that interest and involve the local community. The first of these lectures will be on Wednesday 16th January 2019, and we are privileged to welcome distinguished historian Andrew Roberts as our first speaker.

Dr Roberts has a PhD from Cambridge University, is a Visiting Professor at King’s College, London and is the author of thirteen books spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, many of which have won major awards. In October he published his definitive biography, ‘Churchill: Walking with Destiny’. The book, serialised on Radio 4 as Book of the Week, has garnered rave reviews. It has been the highest-selling hardback in London for several weeks and is currently 7th on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Although there are innumerable books already published on Churchill, this has been welcomed as an erudite but fresh and accessible work with no single-volume rival. Dr Roberts has uncovered a treasure trove of new primary material. In addition to unprecedented Churchill family access, Dr Roberts has been allowed to study the diaries of George VI, who had lunch privately with Churchill on a weekly basis throughout the War. This was by gracious permission of the Queen and is a first for a Churchill biographer.
The lecture is on Wednesday 16th January 2018 at 6.30pm, so we recommend arriving at 6pm. After the lecture there will be a chance to ask questions and interact with Dr Roberts directly. There is no charge for entry but there will be a Retiring Collection and there will be refreshments (paying bar, teas and coffee). There will also be the opportunity to buy signed copies of Andrew’s book.

We look forward to seeing you.
